The modern town of Chita was founded by
Father José de Arce 28 March 1727, after the old village was destroyed by a
landslide. Today there are few ruins of the village and that place is called
"Pueblo Viejo" which is part of the Vereda Dímiza. The first
references to Chita, for the year of 1621, when the Archbishop of Santa Fe, Don
Hernando Arias de Ugarte, makes pastoral visit to the distant town of Chita and
the plains of Casanare, whose doctrines are in the care of four priests: in
