The Church of England Diocese of Guildford was created in 1927, and Guildford Cathedral was consecrated in 1961. Previously, Guildford had been part of the diocese of Winchester; Guildford has eight ecclesiastical parishes – the most historic Grade I listed church buildings are Holy Trinity (in the High Street) St Mary (on the East Bank) and the slightly less significant medieval II* Listed Anglican churches of St John the Evaneglist (in Stoke) and St Nicholas (at the foot of Guildown (the west bank).
