The formation of the island began in mid-Pliocene times,
approximately 3.45 million years ago. Nine distinct eruptive centres from
different geological ages, ranging from mid-Pliocene to Pleistocene, have
contributed to the formation. No single model of the island's geological
evolution cantherefore be
ascertained.
