Oradea is first mentioned in 1113, under
the Latin name Varadinum in a diploma belonging to a Benedictine abbey from Zobor.
Bishop Sixtus Varadiensis and Saul de Bychar are mentioned in the document, but
its roots are of Roman-Dacian origin, archaeological findings stating that Romans
and Dacians were established in Salca area of the city and in Băile Felix area.
Throughout the Middle Ages, the Fortress became a place of living for an ethnic
mosaic that helped to establish the ethnic composition of Oradea today; Romanians,
Hungarians, Austrians, Slovaks, Hebrews, Ruthenians and Turks.
