The Burren area formed part of the
territory ofCorcoModhruadh,
meaning "seed or people of Modhruadh” which were coextensive with thediocese of Kilfenora. At some point
around the 12th Century, the territory was divided in two:
CorcoModhruadhIartharach ("Western Corcomroe") and
CorcoModhruadhOirthearach ("Eastern Corcomroe") also knownasBoireannwhich in the late 16th century
