Marikina was one of the seats of the Spanish colonial government in the past
centuries, and has been used as the base of Roman Catholic missions to the
Philippines. Among the religious orders include the Dominicans, the
Franciscans, the Jesuits and the Augustinians which are the first to arrive in
Marikina. The Our Lady of the Abandoned Church completed in 1572, is the seat
of Nuestra SeƱora de los Desamparados, the Patron Saint of Marikina.
