Most of the population in butwal 1,08,755(according to census 2001) consists of Pahari immigrants from nearby hill districts especially (Palpa), (Arghakhanchi) (Gulmi)and (Syangja). There are also students, and ex-Gurkha soldiers commonly called Lahure, and a significant Madheshi population
