History of Telsiai

Džiugas founded the city. Telšiai was first mentioned in written sources around 1450. Although the oldest archeological findings in the area of the city are from Stone age.

In 15 century Telšiai already had a state-owned manor. The manor and the parish were governed by Samogitian elders. During the Uprising of Samogitian peasants Telšiai was the centre of it.

In the end of 17 century Telšiai became the centre of culture and politics of Samogitia. Sejmiks of the noblemen were organised in the city and the court was established. Finally Magdeburg rights
