The remarkable town of Roussillon is perched atop an undulating terrain,
stained by the region’s unique ochre earth. Vineyards and forests cleave the
countryside, revealing stunning stripes of this natural pigment, each one
ranging from amber gold to a deep scarlet. A hundred years ago, dozens of
quarries mined the much-coveted Provençal ochre from the surrounding area, and
used it to add color to paints and textiles
