It is one of the oldest towns on the
Atlantic Coast and was established in the largest Indian reservation in the
North Coast. It was discovered in 1533 by the Spanish Francisco César and that
same year received the visit of Don Pedro de Heredia. In 1560 he was given in
charge to Alonso de Montalvar then Nicolas Pantoja de las Heras. In 1745 it was
officially declared by the township government Cartagena and subsequently, on
