According to the writings found on the time of the conquest, it is believed that the population of Sutatenza was founded by the Spaniards when Don Gonzalo Jimenez de Quesada went to the mines of Chivor left holding the Valley province Sutatenza later traced by it the way that would lead to the temple of the sun in 1537.

From the religious point of view, there Sutatenza Valley since 1556, when Fray Juan de los Barrios, was pleased to appoint the Dominicans to evangelize.
