Before the Spanish arrived , the area was inhabited
by indigenous soracaes, family of Muisca , who were part of the chieftainship of
Hunza, dominated by zaque of Hunzahúa and termed CORACA or Mansion Regia.
The
region was occupied in 1537 by Gonzalo Jiménez de Quesada , who was the founder
of Bogotá . Soracá parish was elevated as
