With the fall of the agroindustrial sector Girardot and the new economic dynamics of the region in tourism and the construction of the new Panamerican Highway that runs from Bogota to Girardot ; heavily favored township which boomed with the construction of places on the route and accommodation centers to consolidate as a municipality in 1968 under the current name. The urban growth of the municipality extends over the Panamerican Highway to conurbarse with Girardot.

The Land Use Plan gives the category of municipality within the metropolitan area of Girardot in the consolidation of the city region (regional center).
