Another version, the product of oral tradition claims that the December 8,
1752, a group of farmers and ranchers who came from the town of Santo Tomas
atlanticense made the foundation of the "Site of the Conception of
Swirl". However, data from the Historical Archive of the Magdalena
Municipality confirmed that Whirlpool was founded long before the towns of Santo
Tomas and Palmar, including the founder of Palmar, a Mr. Varela, was first
established in Swirl.
Another version that the first name was "Punta Cuchillo" along the
Magdalena River and due to overflows same, villagers were forced to move to a
distant place called "The Guayabales" and later inclement summer
forced them to move back to the original site, baptizing him with the name of
Swirl.
As for rural areas, oral tradition holds that it is likely due to fishing
activities which began to develop in the lake area of the municipality,
residents from Swirl, New Site, Bog, Pueblo Viejo, Soledad, Guaimaro and other
towns were settled in this area becoming permanent temporary settlements which
later led to the current Corregimientos.
As in the rest of the Department and, in general, on the Costa, the existing
population in the Municipality is the result of the mixing process, especially
between whites and Indians
