Founded on January 29, 1536 by Sebastian de
Belalcázar , in a village of a tribe of grasses, natives who inhabited the area
now covered by the department of Nariño in Colombia and the province of Carchi
in Ecuador.
In 1734 it was erected as a parish in 1871
and pleaded and borough boundaries as defined.
