Ipiales originally Piales, then Ypiales. The name of the city comes from the chiefdom Ipial, belonging to the ethnic group of grasses. The invasion of the Incas to this region, and later of the Spanish, and found organized settlements, the findings support the pre-Columbian, and corroborates the chronicler Pedro Cieza de Leon in 1545.
