Etymologically, the name given to this
region comes from the Indian word motilón - Bari "Tarra" which means
enclosed in rivers, rather than defense. The Catatumbo region was
surrounded by many indigenous families motilonas since primitive times, forming
groups consisting of approximately 50 people, these community inhabited house
or huts. The primitive people of this region were displaced from these
lands were discovered in 1940 when the first oil wells.
