The
discovery of the territory did Don Sebastian de Belalcazar in November 1538.
HISTORY OF SETTLEMENT The small village founded by the Spanish and Guzmán
Sanabria, with houses of mud and thatched roof, had no significance initially.
However,
here came the priest Juan Antonio Buenaventura of Portela and founded the
parish of Santa Ana guamo called, which occurred on June 26, 1772. Shortly
after, Jose Guzman de Arce, wealthy landowner and therefore owner of many lands
in that region, gave the land for a real populated it did, with the same name
of Santa Ana del guamo. Years passed, there were more
and more people, more buildings; the square was drawn, rose a
great temple, and several times because he was the victim of several fires,
then becoming, in a stately and prosperous people. So
much so that by executive decree of 1880 was the capital of the center, made by
transfer of El Espinal. Then between 1871 and 1876,
was capital of the Sovereign State of Tolima and therefore hosted the
Legislature. That's right, so to speak,
that has as classical guamo founding date, that of June 26, 1772, when the
priest Buenaventura Portela created and founded the parish of Santa Ana del
guamo. I was turned into a town by Act of February 21, 1863 and
officially opened as such on January 1, 1864
