Barrow is situated at the tip of the
Furness peninsula on the north-western edge of Morecambe Bay, south of the
Duddon Estuary and east of the Irish Sea. The town centre and major industrial
areas sit on a fairly flat coastal shelf, with a gentle incline leading away
from the coast. Ten miles to the north-east is the southern boundary of the
Lake District National Park. Barrow is the only major urban area in south
Cumbria, with other nearby settlements including Dalton-in-Furness, Ulverston,
