The county covers a land area of 1,700 km² (656 sq; mi) and a total area (including water) of 1,851 km² (715 sq; mi) , with a population of approximately 57,527, with Enniskillenits county town. It is a mainly rural landscape.
It is one of four counties of Northern Ireland presently to have a majority of the population from a Catholic background, according to the 2001 census
