Metal artifacts were increasingly important in Huamachuco, and included not
only gold, silver, and copper, but also gilded copper and some arsenic bronze
mixtures. Common metal products that were made by the people of Huamachuco
included chisels, adzes, plates, pins, tupus, needles,
tweezers, as wells as ingots and scraps of pure metals. Textile manufacture was
an essential economic activity in this region. This conclusion of textiles
being an important part of the Huamachuco economy came from the many weaving
tools that were found at the site. As a result of the wet climate in the
Huamachuco area, there were not many textiles that survived the climate
conditions. There is evidence that Huamachuco did have some interaction with
other areas that surrounded it. Areas that Huamachuco was said to have traded
with were Cajamarca, which was only a short distance south, and areas directly
west Recuay and Moche cultural zones. Huamachuco is believed to have had
secured trade with the Pacific, dominating trade through, Cajamarca to the
coast, Recuay and the Callejon de Huaylas to the coast. Huamachuco become the
main regional prestige center with its political center Marcahuamachuco, that
was used for trade during the Andean regional period
