Mangyongdae-ri, South Pyongan Province and became a district of Pyongyang in
September of 1959. The area is surrounded by several hills, the highest one
named Mangyong (Ten thousand views) Hill because one can enjoy a bird’s-eye
view of the exquisite landscape, and the village at its foot is called
Mangyongdae. It extends to the west past the
Sunhwa
River, to Kangso-gun. Aside from Chilgol and Oryu-ri (which is a military
area), the district is divided between Kwangbok (Restoration) Street and
Chongchun (Youth) Street. Kwangbok Street is a residential district of high
rise apartments populated by members of the DPRK media and cultural
institutions.
Mangyongdae is presented as the birthplace of the former Korean leader Kim Il Sung
