Juigalpa has an area of 726.75 sq km, in addition to 20 districts. The city of Juigalpa was elevated to Villa the February 4, 1862 and the city January 27, 1879. In 1935 the territorial department is reduced with the creation of Boaco department and then in 1949 with the separation of the territory of what is now the department of Rio San Juan
