Formerly the town was called Xundabé, meaning pigeons Refuge, San Carlos de la Isleta, and San Jose Olympia Urrao.
Some versions of the origin of the present name in this region say they dwelt an Indian named Gaspar Urrado and deleted the "d" was Urrao, or it might come from the words Catíos "Uro" meaning Cera and "Do" river then it would be Rio Wax or Wax Road.
The village became a must, or settlement, for travelers between Antioquia and Chocó , and took off his progress this condition. Also included Urrao before the municipality is now Vigia del Fuerte. hence the first name that was in San Carlos de la Isleta was the town that existed in the Murri River desemocadura the Atrato.
Its ecological value is the PNN Orchids, only one located entirely in Antioquia and place that provides a habitat for a rich and varied fauna and flora
