Mutiscua was formed by the recruitment of two words: Mutis and Tescua to remind posterity that on 1 April 1841 died in combat Tescua Colonel Manuel Gama Mutis hero who had distinguished himself in the battle of Tarquí. Initially, the parish was placed under the patronage of St. Joseph parish names listed as "San José de Mutiscua". The patron saint is the Virgin Our Lady of Mercy.
