On January 1st of 1788 was granted the status of town and 1810 received the title of Villa. Under Decree 19 May of 1825 he was appointed as head of the Canton of Timana, later was the capital of the southern province of the sovereign state of Tolima and the creation of the department of Huila , was head of one of the three provinces was divided the new department.
