Our battles: The writer Neftali Rivera Benavides, in one of its most important
historical accounts referred in the following terms, the most significant
gesture, fought on the territory of Funes: The first and the last battles of
the war of independence for independence of Colombia were fought in Funes, the
first on October 16, 1809 in tarabita of " Mexico "and the second in the village of
Sucumbios the June 12, 1825.

The ten (10) August 1809 occurred in the city of Quito the first cry of liberty, and constituted a board of government to be exercised in that country, the authority previously wielded the Spanish monarchs. One of the first steps of that meeting was the organization of a regular army to march on grass, in order to seek the annexation of its territory to Ecuador.
