the Municipality of Coelemu (whose territory is Subdelegations 3rd Vegas Itata, 4th of Coelemu and 5th of Batuco, the department with the limits assigned to it by decree of November 3, 1885), and theMunicipality of Rafael (whose territory is Subdelegations 6th Coleral, 7th of R�nquil, 8th of Cural�, 9th of Cornuco, 10th of Rafael Roa and 11th). The Municipality of Tom�, manages Tome Subdelegations 1st and 2nd of Collen department.
In 1914 the railway reached the city with the connection Chill�n - Conception . The service was suspended in 1985 because of budget constraints imposed by the government of Augusto Pinochet to the State Railway Company .
On December 30 of 1927 is enacted DFL 8582, with the Department of Coelemu that becomes the " Department Tome ". With DFL 8583 of December 30 of 1927 , created the communes and Sub Tome and Coelemu in the department, thus abolishing the Municipality of Raphael, whose territory becomes part of Tom�. The Commune Sub delegation Tom� and includes the old sub delegations 1. � Tome 2. � Collen, 9. � Conuco, 10. Rafael and 11 th. � Roa, and districts 1. � Vega Itata, 2nd Barn, 6 . � Perales, 7. � Purema and 8. � PUDA, the former sub 3. � Itata Vega.
The department took is suppressed in the 1970s, with the new political - administrative division.
On February 27th of 2010 I took one of the communities most affected by the earthquake and tsunami. This tsunami caused 18 deaths in the town of Dichato , including tourists.The damage was substantial, with the destruction of homes, although these were concentrated in Coliumo Bay (in the towns of Dichato and Coliumo), affected by the tsunami. In the parade of Tom� severely damaged the bell tower of the parish church "Nuestra Se�ora de la Candelaria", which was repaired. It also resulted in severe structural damage and unrecoverable the town hall of the municipality of Tom�, the former home of textile businessman Carlos Werner, and also down the Tritons Trevi,
