The Tijuca National Park was declared a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO in 1991 . The current area of 3 958.47 ha , due to an expansion of the park, effected through the Federal Decree no number of July 4th of 2004 .
Currently, the Tijuca National Park has its shared management between the ICMBio , the State Government of Rio de Janeiro and the Municipality of the City of Rio de Janeiro . The participation of society through NGOs such as the Association of Friends of the Tijuca National Park , the Earth Brazil and Terrazul, is encouraged
