The Gallipolipeninsula is located in Turkish Thrace (or East Thrace), the European part ofTurkey, with theAegean Sea to the west and theDardanelles straits to the east. Gallipoli derives its name from the Greek(Kallipolis), meaning "Beautiful City". Inantiquity, it was known as theThracian Chersonese.
